Pat,
I have searched it out myself and found no answer for tossing the 70th week into the future nor have I heard a reason for doing so. You said, “I studied the scriptures for myself and have made the conclusion I have made” . . . . So what reason do “you” give for putting the 70th week into the future; how did you come to this conclusion?
You also said, “It is obvious that "he" in Daniel 9:27 is not Jesus.”
I disagree, the “He” in Daniel 9:27 can only refer to Jesus Christ, “the Messiah” who is referred to in verses 25 and 26. Jesus “confirmed the covenant,” which means the new covenant, and after 3 ½ years of his ministry He caused “the sacrifice ... to cease” by His death on the cross. This position not only fits the context of Daniel 9:24-27, the facts of history, and New Testament (see Romans 15:8 and Matthew 26:28), but is the position held to by the majority of well respected older Bible commentaries (see the commentaries of Matthew Henry, Jamieson, Fausett and Brown, Adam Clarke, etc).
This prophecy that we have been discussing makes sense when we recognize that “he” refers to none other than Jesus Christ. There is no need to insert or envision an antichrist, a gap theory or a rebuilt Jewish Temple in these verses when we understand that this prophecy was/is about Jesus Christ. So by recognizing that “he” refers to Jesus Christ, this prophecy makes sense.
(27) And he [Christ] shall confirm the [new] covenant with many for one week [the last 7-year period of Daniel 9:24]: and in the midst of the week [after 3 ½ years of holy ministry] he [Christ] shall cause [by His death on the cross] the sacrifice [of the Jewish Temple] and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations [of the Jewish leaders who instigated Christ’s death] he [Christ] shall make it [the Temple] desolate [Christ’s death ultimately finished the Temple service], even until the consummation [which occurred 40 years later when the Roman armies led by Titus finally burned the Temple to the ground and killed approximately one million Jews. See War of the Jews by Josephus], and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate [the Jewish nation and its Temple in 70 A.D.].
Speaking of the Temple, most Christians throughout history have taught that the “Temple” in 2 Thessalonians 2 refers to the “Church” not a rebuilt Jewish Temple (See my post here at the Biblical Gathering Forum entitled - Will the Jewish Temple be rebuilt).
So, again I do not find any “biblical” justification for pushing the 70th week into the future nor see a reason to insert a 2,000 year gap between the 69 and the 70 week. The 70th week follows immediately after the 69th week, if it doesn’t then how can it be properly be called the 70th week?
Yes, this prophecy can be very wearisome and very difficult to understand but it is worth considering so that we do not come to a wrong interpretation and begin promoting a wrong interpretation.
Peace
